In Search Of The Right Gift

In search of the right gift

Finding the right gift for children is increasingly difficult. Studies show that children mature earlier and, given the characteristics of the society in which we live, the youngest show a great predilection for technological toys. That is why for parents, choosing the right toy for the child’s age and tastes sometimes becomes a real nightmare.

We could say that a smart purchase would be one in which we manage to gather the following elements: that our gift is useful, safe and that it contributes to the intellectual, emotional and social development of the child. But how can we achieve this goal? Does the price or the quantity of toys we give out influence this?

Most experts agree that, in general, an excess of toys negatively affects the child’s imagination. Other conclusions that reveal is that the most expensive product is not always the most elements it brings to the child. Therefore, if we adhere to the recommendations of psychologists, the objective of parents will be to find gifts that stimulate their child’s development and help them expand their knowledge.

THE GIFT ACCORDING TO AGE

When choosing the ideal gift, you must take into account the age of the child. The little ones are at a stage that needs to stimulate their psychomotor skills, their concentration, their creativity and hearing sensitivity. One option is to give them musical instruments, stuffed animals with sounds, plasticine, watercolors, coloring book or objects that help them move, such as tricycles or bicycles.

If the child is already going to school, it is recommended to use toys that help them to stimulate their attention and memory, as well as those didactic games that stimulate their communication and improve their knowledge. In this case, board games, musicals in English, talking figures or construction toys can be very suitable for them.

The fact that adolescence “comes earlier”, that is, according to scientific studies today’s children mature earlier and earlier, makes our children’s preferences change from the age of 9. The so-called Net Generation has a predilection for mobile telephony, computers, video games and tablets. Psychologists recommend that  to get this type of gift right, in addition to the child’s age, it is taken into account that the technological object in question is a means of communication that helps them to play and interact and does not contribute to isolating them from their environment. However, when opting for these types of gifts, adults must monitor their use of them to avoid future problems.

Another alternative that is also highly recommended for teenagers is to give them gifts to encourage sports practice and spend time with other people, such as rackets, skates or other sports accessories.

GIVE AFFECTION

When we give gifts to our children, we must take into account the values that are transmitted with this gesture. The child must understand the gift as a reward, either for his academic performance or for his good behavior. Parents have to know how to convey that the price of the gift is not directly proportional to the love you have for them.

Another option is to make children see that affection is one of the best gifts that can be received and given, a priceless present that we all possess and with lasting effects.
